WHAT COULD YOU BE DOING DURING YOUR VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE?

Get Hands-On, Go Outdoors & Experience Rural Sabah for Yourself

Come ready to get involved, explore and experience rural Sabah for yourself. You might get your hands dirty planting vegetables with local farmers, carry water pipes through the jungle alongside villagers, repair community infrastructure, taste local delicacies, exchange stories and knowledge, or simply take in the natural surroundings of Kota Belud, Sabah.

Every visit brings something different. Your experience will depend on the programme you choose, what’s happening in the community, the location and the weather — making each volunteering experience unique in its own way.

  • Some infrastructure experiences may take you into our gravity-fed rural water programmes.

You could find yourself carrying HDPE pipes through village or jungle terrain, helping villagers lay pipelines or supporting other suitable non-technical work.

It’s a chance to see beyond the finished water system and understand the terrain, teamwork and effort required to bring water from its source to a community.

  • Experience community infrastructure volunteerism by working alongside villagers on practical projects that support everyday community life.

Depending on what is happening during your visit, you could help carry and prepare materials, repair community facilities, improve bridges or walkways, or take part in other suitable hands-on work. You don't need construction experience — suitable activities will be guided according to the programme and your group.

  • Sit down together and experience local food and delicacies prepared by villagers, while getting to know the people behind your experience.

For our multi-day expeditions, this may also include cultural dinners or cultural nights, traditional activities, village games and conversations around the table — giving you time to exchange stories, knowledge and experiences beyond the volunteering itself.

  • There is plenty to discover beyond the worksite. Walk with local people and learn about local plants, traditional uses of plants, fruits and crops found around the village and surrounding forest.

Depending on the community, you may also get to discover stingless bee farming, learn how local honey is produced and hear directly from the people who practise it.

  • For multi-day expedition programmes, be ready to explore. You could go jungle trekking, walk through farms and village trails, swim in rivers and experience the natural landscape of rural Kota Belud.

And sometimes the experience is simply about slowing down — waking up early, watching the sunrise, breathing in the fresh air and experiencing a very different rhythm of life.

  • Not everything needs to feel like work. Join kampung games, group challenges and activities with local people and fellow volunteers.

These informal moments often make it easier to talk, laugh, exchange knowledge and form connections with people you may never otherwise have had the opportunity to meet.

COME READY FOR THE EXPERIENCE
